Can FIPS SKU Access Points join Non-FIPS controller?

Customer Environment

FIPS SKU APs Non-FIPS Controller

Root Cause

Even though AP sends ‘HW SKU’ and ‘FIPS Mode’ in discovery, SZ with 6.0 (not a FIPS release) will not read these two attributes and treats this AP as a Regular AP.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check the controller  & Access Points software version

Resolution

STEPS TO BRING UP FIPS ACCESS POINT ON A NON-FIPS CONTROLLER

1. Ensure that the controller is on Version 6.0 (this is supported only on 6.0 and higher Smartzone versions) or above
2. If the AP entry is already listed in Smartzone, delete the entries before proceeding with the below steps
3. Factory reset the AP and flash them to Standalone code
4. Allow the AP to find the controller and join
 
NOTE:
FIPS Access Points can be managed by a Non-FIPS controller and an RMA is NOT required.
